A miniature a day fully improvised, each one inspired by Marguerite Yourcenar’s “Thirty-Three Names of God”.
From the 17th april to the 19th may 2020 (Milan, while in full pandemic), every morning, just enough time for a coffee and warm my fingers up, I posted on Instagram and on Facebook a minute of an acoustic guitar in duo with myself.
A stream of thoughts mostly atonal, often politonal, sometimes “accidentaly” in sync with the news.
intending to create a daily appointment, a sort of ritual (secular of course) with the chance of a shared and distant reflection (distant meaning abstract) from the vicissitudes of everyday life.
A ritual of strength and discipline.

My hopes were more than exceeded.
Friends and strangers texted me, they made donations and, above all, they asked me for something unforseen: the album.”

Turra describes in that way the origins of a work that led him to ask for the essential intervention of U/nu, Rosario Di Rosa, award-winning pianist and contemporary jazz/electronic producer, here as artistic director.
U/nu’s work has taken miniatures to a higher level: not just an acoustic-guitar-solo-album, but an electroacoustic piece of extraordinary refinement.

The relationship between the played parts and the backgrounds expressly recorded and sent by friends and partners from all over the world (Hong Kong, Yorkshire, Sicily, Milan, Barcelona, wherever) created a shared testimony of a “present time” very special for everyone: in each composition the original environment has been replaced with the field-recording that is more relevant to the aesthetics of the subject miniaturet reprojecting the same distant hundreds of miles crumbling both the levels of reality to give life to a third one to offer the comfort of pure abstraction.

While listening to what is just over than half an hour of music, you can perceive (despite the complexity of the contents) a light mood, suspended, lost, happy and terribly busy, as children on the beach struggling with sand castles, or like that Derek Bailey/Thomas Bonvalet’s duo record produced by Tortoise.

“Alberto Turra gives back to these pandemic times a creative parenthesis that contains the same amazement of the first day of summer. The 33 names of God in Yourcenar finally have a sound and a language that are not those of words. And like all projects that were not planned and would certainly not have existed in "normal" times, 33 Miniatures has the sound of the unexpected. When Alberto asked me to work on the sound of his guitar and to add electronics to a work that in itself was already standing as it was, I asked myself several questions. One of them, perhaps the most important, was how to intervene without getting in the way of what he had done and, if possible, add a "different" perspective to the whole. So I came up with the idea of emphasizing the "environmental part", that is to add electronically some environments/textures that would influence the guitar from time to time, which, recorded every day in the same room with a mobile phone, could instead ideally tell multiple stories and places of this period of forced quarantine. I think the result is something unexpected, a poetic and powerful document at the same time. After all, artists do nothing but this, they give the dark corners that we carry a new chance.”

Una miniatura al giorno completamente improvvisata, ognuna ispirata a “I trentatrè nomi di dio” di Marguerite Yourcenar.
“Dal 17 aprile al 19 maggio 2020 (Milano, piena pandemia) ogni mattina, giusto il tempo di un caffè e di svegliare le dita, ho pubblicato su Instagram e su Facebook un minuto di chitarra acustica in duo con me stesso.
Un fluire di pensieri prevalentemente atonale, spesso politonale, a volte “casualmente” in sincrono con le ricorrenze di cronaca con l'intenzione di creare un appuntamento giornaliero, quasi un rituale (laico, naturalmente) con la speranza di una riflessione condivisa e lontana (nel senso di “astratta”) dalle vicissitudini del quotidiano.
Un rituale di forza e disciplina.
Le mie speranze sono state più che attese.
Amici e estranei mi hanno scritto, fatto donazioni, e soprattutto mi hanno chiesto una cosa non prevista: il disco.”

Così Turra descrive le origini di un lavoro che lo ha portato a chiedere l’intervento essenziale di U/nu, Rosario Di Rosa, premiato pianista e produttore jazz/elettronico contemporaneo, in questo caso nella veste di produttore artistico.
Il lavoro di U/nu ha portato le miniature ad un livello superiore: non soltanto un acoustic-guitar-solo-album, bensì un lavoro elettro acustico di straordinaria ricerca.
La relazione tra le parti suonate e gli sfondi appositamente registrati e spediti da amici e collaboratori da ogni parte del mondo (Hong Kong, Yorkshire, Sicilia, Milano, Barcellona, wherever) ha creato una testimonianza condivisa di un “momento presente” molto particolare per tutti: in ogni composizione l’ambiente originale è stato sostituito con il field-record più attinente all’estetica della miniatura in oggetto riproiettando la stessa centinaia di chilometri distante, sgretolando entrambi i piani di realtà di uno e dell’altro oggetto per dare vita a un terzo che potesse dare il conforto della pura astrazione.

Durante l’ascolto di quello che risulta poco più di mezz'ora di musica, si percepisce (nonostante la complessità dei contenuti) un clima lieve, sospeso, spaesato, felice e terribilmente impegnato, come i bambini in spiaggia alle prese con i castelli di sabbia, o come quel disco In duo di Thomas Bonvalet e Derek Bailey prodotto dai Tortoise.

“Alberto Turra restituisce a questi tempi di pandemia una parentesi creativa che contiene la stesso stupore del primo giorno d'estate. I 33 nomi di Dio della Yourcenar hanno finalmente un suono e una lingua che non siano quelli delle parole. E come tutti i progetti non previsti e che sicuramente non sarebbero esistiti in tempi “normali”, 33 Miniatures ha il suono dell'inatteso. Quando Alberto mi propose di lavorare sul suono della sua chitarra e di aggiungere l'elettronica a un lavoro che di per sé stava in piedi già così com'era mi sono posto diverse domande. Una di queste, forse la più importante, era come riuscire a intervenire senza intralciare minimamente quello che lui aveva fatto e, se possibile, aggiungere una prospettiva “altra” all'insieme. Mi venne quindi l'idea di sottolineare la “parte ambientale”, cioè aggiungere elettronicamente degli ambienti/texture che influenzassero di volta in volta la chitarra che, registrata ogni giorno in una stessa stanza con un telefonino, poteva invece idealmente raccontare storie e luoghi molteplici di questo periodo di quarantena forzata. Credo che il risultato sia qualcosa di inaspettato, un documento poetico e potente allo stesso tempo. In fondo gli artisti non fanno che questo, concedono agli angoli bui che ci portiamo addosso una nuova possibilità.”
